Imagine having complete control over your massage. You can choose all of your favorite techniques and adjust every little detail to your liking.

Or perhaps you just want to sit down, press a button, and start enjoying a luxurious massage within seconds?

Introducing Ogawa’s Smart 3D massage chair. It’s chock-full of features, with cutting edge technology that you’ll only see with a few recliners. Our Ogawa Smart 3D massage chair review covers it all!

Ogawa Smart Sense 3D Massage Chair Design Overview

Every once in a while, an innovative new massage chair comes along that sets a new standard for luxury tech, and that award belongs to Ogawa’s Smart 3D recliner.

It’s hard to find fault with it because it checks almost all of the boxes when it comes to appeasing a diverse range of users.

It’s modestly priced, offers one of the most impressive massage menus, and doesn’t skimp on accessories. It even boasts brand new technology that even the most expensive chairs don’t have, such as a tablet instead of a remote!

We know you’re biting at the bit to discover what the Ogawa Smart 3D massage chair has to offer, and don’t worry- we’ll cover everything here in our Ogawa Smart 3d massage chair!

To start, let’s look at the design. The dimensions are 50″L x 34″W x 49″H, weighing 290 pounds.  In other words, this recliner is a beast.

It also looks like a massage chair, meaning you can’t push in the foot ports, and it doesn’t have that futuristic “pod” look like some other chairs.

Still, it does well to accommodate a max height of 6’6” and a max weight of 285 pounds. That’s above average compared to many high-end recliners that only cater to smaller, lighter body types.

The ottoman has sensors in the footwells that automatically extend to fit your height with precision. There are even three shoulder-width adjustments for those with a wider build.

You may be wondering how you can fit this in your tiny apartment, and truth be told- if you don’t have much space, then this may not be the chair for you.

Still, Ogawa did a good job of trying to ease the cumbersome factor by adding Space Saving Technology that gives a 4” clearance from the backrest to the wall.

Quality-wise, this is an outstanding ergonomic recliner with a bounty of excellent features that cater to both hobbyists and those seeking therapeutic relief for chronic back pain. The Ogawa Smart Chair is an FDA-registered medical device.

Ogawa Smart 3D Zero Gravity Massage Chair Sense Features

Overall, we were quite impressed with Ogawa’s implementation of the features. It shows they took their time and studied the market to design a well-rounded ergonomic recliner with a price tag that won’t make your wallet cry.

Illustration of how the Ogawa Smart Sense 3D Smart Roller Technology works in a back of a human body

S-Track 3D Roller

Ogawa started with an industry-standard 32” S-track design that follows the natural curve of the spine, from the neck to the lumbar region.

Sure, there are chairs with an S&L-hybrid track that extends underneath the seat. You won’t get a glute roller massage with the Smart Sense 3d massage chair, but at least they deliver big with a 3D dual roller system.

That means that as the rollers move up and down the track, you can adjust the roller depth to also move in and out by 3-inches.

It mimics the movements of human hands, pressing deeply into the back. With six intensity levels to choose from, you can take your deep tissue massage as far you desire.

3D Body Scan

This is also industry-standard and nothing to get crazy over. The Smart Sense 3D massage chair will use its rollers to scan and “memorize” the dimensions of your body and spine.

Then, it tweaks its techniques to deliver a more focused massage with greater accuracy according to your body.

This is offered with a lot of high-end chairs, and sometimes the 3D scan can be off, needing manual adjusting.

Ogawa Smart Sense 3D in Zero Gravity Seating position

One-Touch Zero Gravity Seating

Zero-G seating is another standard feature offered by the Smart Sense, but honestly, it’s a wildly popular feature, and it’s rare to see a massage chair without it nowadays.

People are raving about the “weightless” concept developed by NASA. Your body is suspended at an angle that elevates the knees above the heart, taking all pressure off the spine.

This helps facilitate blood circulation throughout the body, decreasing blood pressure and increasing relaxation during the massage.

Many chairs only offer one Zero-G position, while the big players offer 2-3 positions. The Ogawa Smart Sense 3D massage chair offers two positions, which is above average for this feature.

Lumbar Heat & Vibration

This is where those with chronic back pain can benefit greatly from the Smart Sense 3D chair. While getting massaged by the 3D rollers, you can turn up the heat in the lumbar region to melt away pain and tension.

Now, it’s an OK implementation, but heated massage chairs are not new and many chairs offer heat throughout the back, as well as in the leg ports.

With the Smart Sense, you only get it in one small area, and you can’t even adjust the temperature. Heat is only a tiny drop in the bucket of what this chair can do, so we don’t think it’s a dealbreaker.

Spot & Partial Massage

One small detail that many massage chairs overlook, but Ogawa (thankfully) didn’t, is the spot and partial massage features.

The Spot Mode allows you to immediately target a specific muscle area that you’d like the rollers to pay more attention to.

The Partial Mode lets you select an area of the neck or back, and the 3D rollers will travel there and start working out the kinks until they’re gone.

Tablet & App Operation: First of Its Kind

The Ogawa Smart Sense 3D massage chair is the first on the market to utilize an Android tablet with a pre-programmed app instead of a traditional remote to operate the chair.

It’s incredibly user-friendly and lets you choose your programs and customize everything directly on the tablet. It even has a diagnostics section for any troubleshooting that may arise.

Ogawa makes it even easier to tackle the learning curve of mastering all of those features with a well-stocked online library of resources that include assembly videos, manuals, and everything you need to learn about the new technology that comes with this chair.

Ogawa Smart Lounge Sofa Massage Chair Programs

This is where the Ogawa Smart 3D Chair shines, with a meticulous massage menu bursting with 17 automatic programs, six advanced techniques, and customization options that let you build and save your massage creations.

This is huge, considering there are top-of-the-line recliners that offer only one advanced technique, or they don’t let you customize your massages as much as the Smart Sense.

You can even customize the duration of any massage by choosing 5-minute increments of 5, 10, 15, 20, 25, or 30 minutes. That’s personalized service at its finest!

Automatic Programs

When you want to sink into your chair, push a button, and relax, you can do so by choosing one of the presets from the tablet. Here is a sampling of some of the presets:

  • Quick
  • Gentle
  • Relax
  • Vigorous
  • Swedish
  • Japanese
  • Thai
  • Chinese
  • Balinese
  • Upper Back
  • Lower Back
  • Lower Body

Unlimited Memory Programs

Another key feature of this recliner is the ability to create unlimited profiles to save your massage creations. This is another innovative piece of technology debuted by this brand, and we love it because it gives the user full control of their massage experience.

Now, every member of the family, friends…the whole neighborhood can save as many massage combinations as they want under their profile!

All you have to do is jump into the chair, open the app on the tablet, and with one touch, you are relaxing just the way you want, with very little effort.

Leg & Calf Massage

We weren’t 100% impressed with the leg and calf massage offered by the Ogawa Smart 3d Zero gravity massage chair, mainly because we’ve seen other chairs that do it better. With that being said, we don’t recommend this for people who are on their feet for long hours or suffer from chronic leg/foot pain.

While there are mechanical foot rollers, there are no rollers in the leg wells. You also don’t have any heat.

While there are high-quality airbags, they may not offer the same satisfaction as having a combination of rollers, air, and heat soothing your legs at the same time- which is what makes a foot massage on luxury chairs top-notch.

The foot massage is enjoyable; honestly, any type of foot massage is a blessing, so we won’t knock off too many points for that one. But if this is a priority for you based on therapeutic reasons, it may not hit the mark.

Thai Body Stretch

Any ergonomic recliner that offers a Body Stretch gets a round of applause, and the Smart Sense fused in a bit of Thai massage ingenuity to give it an advanced twist.

The thing is, if you’ve ever had a Thai massage, then you know how aggressive it can be. Even if you have to grit your teeth and sacrifice the relaxation factor, afterward, you feel amazing.

Some Ogawa Smart Sense 3D reviews have said that the body stretch is too strong, but that’s preferential, of course. If you’re into a more gentle stretch, then you might want to check out the Yoga Stretch on the Kahuna SM9000- it’s subliminal.

Smart Sense Air Compression Massage

The Smart Sense wouldn’t be a master of the massage if it didn’t offer a quality air massage. It doesn’t disappoint, that’s for sure.

Boasting 64 strategically placed second-generation airbags, you can enjoy a full-body compression massage that feels like being lost inside a fluffy cloud.

Even better, Ogawa’s patented Smart Sense air cell technology gently stretches the body while applying compression to help loosen up your muscles and melt away tension.

The airbags target the Arms, Calves, Feet, Hands, Hips, Thighs, and Shoulders. There are 5 levels of intensity to choose from, and you can also independently control each airbag for optimal customization.

Smart Sense Accessories

Ogawa’s Smart 3D recliner comes with a treasure trove of fun accessories that we were delighted to see, especially for the modest price of this chair.

Image of Ogawa Smart 3D Massage Chair Bluetooth Speakers

It includes Chromotherapy lights on either side of the headrest, which are colored LED lights. The soft glow is believed to stimulate the biochemical makeup of the brain, relaxing and improving the mood.

There’s also a USB port to charge your smart device and premium Bluetooth speakers in the headrest to rock out to your favorite playlist while getting lost in the leisures of this impeccable chair.

Ogawa Smart Massage Chair Pros vs. Cons

PROS

  • Affordable
  • 3D quad roller technology
  • 64 Airbag compression massage
  • 17 auto programs and 6 advanced techniques
  • Unlimited memory programs
  • Tablet and App control center

CONS

  • Heat is not adjustable; only in the lumbar region
  • Sub-par foot & calf massage
  • The Body Stretch may be too intense for some

As you can see, the pros hold a lot more substance than the few cons with the Ogawa Smart lounge sofa massage chair. It offers all of the most essential luxury features you would find with the top models, but this chair costs considerably less.

Sure, it’s an S-track and not an L-track, but the 3D quad rollers are what make the difference anyway. You get a superb back massage that feels life-like, and you can add heat to the lumbar area for added relief if you suffer from back pain.

There are two areas where Smart Sense excels. The first is with its innovative technology that breaks the mold of making a massage chair user-friendly, with unlimited customization options.

They achieve this by switching out the traditional remote and including a full-sized tablet with the chair. With it, you can control every aspect of your massage and even save profiles with all of your favorite massages.

The second area that this brand has excelled in is the number of massage programs on offer. It’s rare to see a chair with six advanced techniques, including a Thai Body Stretch (even if some reviews have said it’s too strong).

If you suffer from chronic back pain, you’ll love the Zero Gravity seating and the 3D rollers. If you’re looking for a hobbyist chair to help you relax after a long day, you’ll love the automatic programs and the Bluetooth speaker system.

Whether you’re on the taller side or more on the larger side, this recliner will automatically adjust itself to accommodate your body type. All in all, there’s a little something for everyone with the Smart Sense 3D chair.

Warranty

As if it could get any better, the Ogawa offers a rock-solid 5-year limited warranty to give you all the peace of mind you need. That includes…

  • 3 years of in-home service, including parts and labor
  • 5 years of framework coverage

Ogawa Smart 3D Massage Chair Review Conclusion

If we had to sum up the Ogawa Smart 3D massage chair in three words, it would be: fun, versatile, and bold. This is an ergonomic recliner that’s not afraid to flaunt new technology, and it does so with its tablet control center that makes the learning curve a smoother ride.

Well-implemented massages like the Body Stretch and Air Massage put the mid-priced Smart Sense up there with the creme de la creme, even outdoing them by paying attention to the details, like offering two Zero Gravity positions.

To conclude this Ogawa Smart 3D massage chair review, we think it’s an ideal addition to any household (except tiny apartments, due to its massive size). Since there are so many massage options, everyone in the family can save their profiles, whether you’re a hobbyist or suffering from chronic back pain and need therapeutic relief.
