What is Sciatica?

According to the National Institute of Arthritis and Musculoskeletal and Skin Diseases (NIAMS), eight out of 10 people have some form of back pain.

Although pain may occur in any area of the back, “it’s most common in the lower back — which supports the most weight,” explains the New York Times’ In-Depth Sciatica Report. This lower back pain often leads to symptoms of sciatica.

“Sciatica is not a diagnosis but a group of symptoms. Anything that places pressure on the lumbar nerves can lead to pain in the sciatic nerve,” explains the report.

Sciatica symptoms can include mild aches, burning sensations, weakness, numbness, tingling, or shooting pain in the buttock or thighs. “Common conditions that cause sciatic nerve pain include spinal stenosis, herniated disc, degenerative disc disease, or nerve compression from the piriformis muscle among others,” explains the report.

Two main muscle groups correspond to the sciatic nerve area: the gluteal muscles (including the piriformis muscle) and the hamstring muscles. When these muscles become tight, weak, or injured, it can lead to lower back pain or sciatic nerve pain.

The piriformis, a small pear-shaped muscle in the gluteal region, is perhaps most commonly associated with sciatica. According to Rice University

“The sciatic nerve usually passes underneath the piriformis muscle, but in 15 percent of the population, it travels through the muscle. It’s thought that acute or chronic injury causes swelling of the piriformis muscle which irritates the sciatic nerve, resulting in sciatica.”

Treatment for sciatica often includes pharmaceuticals, advanced medical treatments like surgery, chiropractic treatments, massage therapy, or self-massage. But with the introduction of L-Tracks, there’s another form of treatment available: massage chairs.

The Benefits of L-Track Massage Chairs

In a massage chair, massage tracks are the mechanism the rollers move along. There are two main types of tracks: S-Tracks and L-Tracks.

An S-Track is an “S” shaped track that replicates the natural curvature of your spine and typically extends from your neck to your tailbone. Since it “fits” your natural shape, it ensures the rollers keep consistent contact and pressure across your entire back — especially in the curved areas like your lower back.

An L-Track picks up where an S-Track ends — typically at the tailbone — and extends into the seat of the chair to create an “L” shape. This track extends the range of the rollers an additional 15 inches or more, which means many massage chairs can now treat the gluteal, piriformis, and hamstring muscles.

Most L-Track massage chairs will, at the very least, treat the gluteal muscles, piriformis, and tips of the hamstrings. However, some have longer tracks (49 to 51-inches) that will treat as far as the middle of your hamstrings.

Since sciatica most commonly affects these areas, today we’re focusing on L-Track massage chairs only.

Summary

4.6

With a 51-inch L-Track, advanced roller technology, seat vibration, lower back heat therapy, and a powerful message across its entire track (including the neck and shoulders), the Titan OS-Pro Summit is the best overall massage chair for sciatica.

The Titan OS-Pro Summit is our pick for the best overall massage chair for sciatica for three main reasons: a 51-inch L-Track, advanced roller technology, and a powerful neck massage.

You may be wondering, why would a sciatica massage chair need a powerful neck massage? It doesn’t.

But many massage chairs that have L-Tracks often don’t have powerful neck massages. So for our overall best massage chair for sciatica, we chose a chair that not only had an excellent seat massage, but an all-around quality massage as well. Let’s take a look at what makes this chair so great.

51-inch L-Track and 3D Rollers

The Titan Pro Summit has one of the longest massage chair tracks on the market — 51 inches. Furthermore, the rollers treat from the top of your neck to your hamstrings, performing a powerful massage the entire way.

A common sentiment you’ll hear from users is that the rollers feel more nuanced and smooth on the Titan Pro Summit than on other L-Track massage chairs. This is due in part to the advanced roller technology used in the Summit.

Lower Back Heat Therapy

Additionally, the Titan Pro Summit features lower back heat therapy that will help dilate the blood vessels in the area to increase circulation and the flow of damage-repairing nutrients. Heat also relaxes the muscles, allowing the rollers to provide a deeper massage.

Seat Vibration

massage-chair-for-sciatica-titan-os-pro-summit-review-zero-gravity-Consumer-Files

In the seat of the Titan Pro Summit is a high-frequency vibration plate. The plate vibrates to stimulate the muscles and microcirculation in the buttock and thighs, which helps to move stagnant fluids from the area.

Powerful Roller Massage

Like we touched on above, the Titan Pro Summit performs a consistent massage across its entire track. So unlike many other L-Track massage chairs that provide a powerful seat or neck massage, on the Titan Pro Summit, you get the best of both worlds.

Let’s take a look at the other features on the Titan Pro Summit.

Feature Highlights of the Titan Pro Summit

Summary

4.5

An unusual design. Most of its features are excellent, but there are a few things that will leave you underwhelmed. It’s clearly above average, but falls short of true excellence.
Ogawa Active Supertrac is recommended for: Hobbyists or casual users. People who suffer from chronic lower back pain.

Ogawa Active Supertrac

Our pick for the most innovative massage chair for sciatica is the Ogawa Active SuperTrac. Let’s take a look at what makes this chair so innovative:

43-Inch SuperTrac

The Ogawa Active SuperTrac features technology you won’t find on any other massage chair. It’s called SuperTrac Technology, and it combines the benefits of an S-Track and an L-Track, but in a new way. Here’s how it works:

When upright in the Ogawa Active SuperTrac, the chair functions as an ordinary S-Track massage chair, massaging from your neck to your tailbone. But when you recline into what Ogawa calls the “bed position,” the chair transforms into a 43-inch L-Track massage chair. This massages from your neck all the way to your glutes.

In the bed position, you’re nearly parallel to the ground, and your body’s weight holds you on top of the rollers for a deep, effective massage. It’s like laying in bed with massage rollers.

Recline Control

On standard L-Track massage chairs, the L-Track combines with the S-Track to form a single piece of track. So, when the backrest reclines, the seat goes with it, which means you don’t have full control over the angle of your recliner.

However, since the SuperTrac technology separates the two types of tracks, you get complete control over your recline angle. The trade off is, you can only enjoy a glute massage in the reclined position and not in the upright position.

Let’s take a look at the Ogawa Active SuperTrac’s other features.

Feature Highlights of the Ogawa Active SuperTrac

  • Mechanical foot rollers

  • Nine automatic massage programs, including two stretch programs
  • Heat therapy for lower back
  • Vibration massage for seat

Summary

4.5

The Infinity Iyashi massage chair is packed with top-of-the-line features like an L-Track, foot rollers, and Zero Gravity among others. Plus, it has additional massage-enhancing features like chromotherapy lights and speakers. Factor in its price, and the Infinity Iyashi is an excellent option for those seeking a high-quality massage at a great value.

massage-chair-for-sciatica-infinity-iyashi-review-highlights-Consumer-Files

Infinity Iyashi

The Infinity Iyashi was one of the first L-Track massage chairs on the market. It’s also one of the most feature-rich massage chairs for sciatica. So if you want a massage chair that has an L-track with all of the additional features users love like chromotherapy lighting, a music system, and space-saving technology, the Infinity Iyashi should be high on your list. Let’s take a closer look at the features on the Infinity Iyashi.

49-Inch L-Track

The Infinity Iyashi has a 49-inch massage track that extends from the top of the neck to the upper part of the hamstrings on most users. In general, the massage on the Infinity Iyashi is vigorous.

However, like many other L-Track massage chairs, its neck massage is known to be mild — perhaps the only drawback on the chair. That said, the “mild” massage is only really felt during the automatic programs, not during the manual programs which give you more control over the location of the rollers.

Although a little lacking in the neck area, the Infinity Iyashi more than makes up for it in advanced technology and additional features like:

Most Feature-Rich Massage Chair for Sciatica: Infinity Iyashi

  • Advanced Airbag Technology
  • Waist Twist

In the seat of the Infinity Iyashi are airbags that inflate to lift the body and then swing it from side to side. This movement helps to mobilize the lower back and provide a gentle stretch.

Lower Back Heat Therapy

Like most of the other massage chairs on our list, the Infinity Iyashi offers heat therapy for the lower back. You can turn it on, off, or add it to any automatic or manual massage program.

Posture Correction

A feature you’ll only find on Infinity massage chairs is posture correction. Here’s how it works: Airbags next to the shoulders inflate to pull the shoulders back and pin them to the backrest. Then, the rollers move up and down the back to help make alignments in the spine.

Let’s take a closer look at the other features on the Infinity Iyashi:

Summary

4.8

High-end features like calf rollers, L-Track, and deep tissue, combined with a robust set of customization options and an affordable price point make the Apex Ultra massage chair an exceptional model for the money.

Apex Ultra

The Apex Ultra (from the same company who produces Titan and Osaki massage chairs) is, quite surprisingly, a powerhouse. When you first look at it, you notice right away it’s not a huge chair.

In fact, it’s not the best chair for wide-framed or very tall users. But average users who love deep-tissue massage will rejoice at the power (and price) of this chair. Let’s take a closer look at the features that make the Apex Ultra an excellent massage chair for sciatica.

51-Inch L-Track

That’s right - the Apex Ultra has one of the longest L-Tracks out there. At 51-inches, the L-Track on the Ultra will easily reach your buttocks and into your hamstrings. And like the Titan Pro Summit, the Apex Ultra delivers a deep neck and shoulder massage so that you won’t be left wanting.

Calf and Foot Rollers

A unique feature you won’t find on any of the other massage chairs on our list is calf rollers. In fact, there are only two other massage chairs in existence (that we know of) that feature them. These calf rollers work in unison with the foot rollers to perform one of the more comprehensive calf and foot massages available.

Although this feature doesn’t treat the usual areas associated with sciatica, if you work on your feet all day and have symptoms of sciatica, the calf rollers might be a great addition to your wellness regimen.

Lumbar and Hip Stretch

On the Apex Ultra, airbags around the hips inflate to twist the lumbar spine gently. This feature is great for lower back mobilization and rotation.

Lower Back Heat Therapy

Like the other chairs on our list, the Apex Ultra features heat therapy for the lower back.

Feature Highlights of the Apex Ultra

  • Body scan technology
  • Three stages of Zero Gravity recline
  • Mechanical foot rollers
  • MP3-compatible with built-in speakers

  • Five automatic massage programs, including full-body stretching
  • Five massage techniques
  • Adjustable shoulder airbags

  • Compact design; doesn’t require much space

Most Affordable Massage Chair for Sciatica: Kahuna LM6800

KAHUNA LM6800

Value for the Money

Summary

4.5

One of the most compelling aspects of the Kahuna massage chair LM6800 is its price. At under $2000, it’s highly affordable. But affordability isn’t what makes this massage chair one of the most popular and highly-rated. It’s what you get for the price. L-Track, heat therapy, and foot rollers are just a few of the top-of-line features you’ll find on the Kahuna LM6800 that make this massage chair one of the best values for the money.

The Kahuna LM6800 could have easily been our pick for the most feature-rich massage chair for sciatica, but it has another aspect that’s perhaps more compelling: its price. At under $2000, this L-Track massage chair is one of the best deals around.

So you may be wondering, who is Kahuna? Is it a no-name brand? Good question.

Kahuna massage chairs are part of a larger company called AJX, LLC. They design, engineer, and manufacture their chairs in China. However, the U.S. base for the company is located in Buena Park, California. They have an online retailer division called GoodPriceWorld which is the only website other than Amazon where you can purchase Kahuna brand massage chairs.

They have an A- Better Business Bureau (BBB) score, but only have two reviews. However, on Amazon, the Kahuna LM6800 has a rating of 4.6 with over 150 reviews.

Let’s take a closer look at what makes the Kahuna LM6800 such a compelling buy.

SV-Chiro Program

The Kahuna LM6800 features six automatic massage programs, one of which — called SV-Chiro — is specifically designed to replicate chiropractic techniques that release subluxations (misalignments) in the spine.

massage-chair-for-sciatica-kahuna-lm6800-l-tracks-Consumer-Files

L-Track

The Kahuna LM6800 features an L-Track that extends from the top of your neck to the tip of your hamstrings. For the price, the L-Track alone would be enough. But the LM6800 doesn’t stop there.

Heat Therapy

Additionally, the Kahuna LM6800 features heat therapy in not one but two areas: the lower back and the calves.

Let’s take a closer look at the other features on the Kahuna LM6800:

Feature Highlights of the Kahuna LM6800

Final Thoughts on Best Massage Chair for Sciatica Review 2024

With so many high-quality L-Track chairs on the market, picking the overall best massage chair for sciatica was a tough decision. But thanks to its advanced roller technology and 51-inch L-Track, the Titan OS-Pro Summit takes the top spot. However, all of the massage chairs on our list each offer their own set of benefits. Regardless of which massage chair you choose, we hope our review made your decision process a little easier.
