Overview of the Best Massage Chair Brands

If you’re like other discerning users, you not only want a quality massage chair, but want to know you’re buying from a quality brand. The problem is that while the internet is full of information about massage chairs, there’s very little information about massage chair brands themselves.

So how do you know you’re buying from one that’s reputable?

We’ve got you covered.

We’ve researched 11 of the world’s best massage chair name brands. We learned about their histories, their strengths, and their most popular models.

And below, we’re sharing of all that information with you to help you choose the right chair and brand for you.

Let’s get started!

Japanese Massage Chair Brands

Panasonic

Panasonic was founded in Japan in 1918 by industrialist, Konosuke Matsushita. Since the beginning of his business, Matsushita committed himself to the development of low-cost, high-quality products which he believed would “enhance the quality of life.”

In 1929, he formally outlined Panasonic’s business mission “to devote to the development and progress of society and people through their business activities in order to enhance the quality of life throughout the world.”

Today, Panasonic continues to produce some of the world’s most advanced electronics, including televisions, digital cameras, and of course, massage chairs.

Panasonic’s first massage chair was introduced in 1969. The brand’s massage chairs were the first to be recognized by the American Chiropractic Association as being credible complements to back therapies. While Panasonic massage chairs are still designed and engineered in Japan, today, they’re manufactured in China.

Panasonic Brand Strengths

With Panasonic, you can expect high-quality components, particularly electronic hardware. They incorporate advanced sensors, motors, and other electronics to deliver a high-tech massage.

Panasonic EP-MA73 Massage Chair

The model that best represents Panasonic’s advanced technology and quality is the EP-MA73.

Summary

4.6

The Panasonic EP MA73 has some of the most advanced massage technology available, and for the price, you’d expect it to. But features like heated massage rollers and ultra kneading give the Panasonic EP MA73 an edge in the high-end massage chair market. And though lacking features like foot rollers and Zero Gravity, if you want a massage chair that will last for years to come, the Panasonic EP MA73 is a great option.

Its most notable features include:

  • 3D rollers that move in three ways: vertically, horizontally, and outward. The third movement, outward, gives you full control over the intensity of your massage.
  • The rollers extend up to 4.9 inches to provide a true deep tissue massage. The massage range covers 30.75 inches vertically and 8.25 inches horizontally.
  • The rollers have jade stones that are heated to warm the muscles across the entire range of the rollers.
  • The rollers are controlled by an intelligent sensor that automatically adjusts the massage pressure, a high-performance brushless motor that ensures a smooth, gliding massage, and a high-speed microprocessor for intricate and precise massage techniques, including Panasonic’s exclusive Junetsu Kneading.
  • At the shoulders, the rollers extend outward to grasp and massage the sides of the neck and the tops of the shoulders. The EP-MA73 is one of only two massage chairs to offer a comprehensive trapezius massage.
  • Airbags next to the thighs inflate to perform a powerful massage on the IT bands. Again, few other massage chairs treat this often sore area.

Family Inada

Family Inada was founded in Japan in 1962 by Nichimu Inada, who remains the company’s president today.

Although the company had periods of developing products other than massage chairs, Inada had a change in perspective in which he concluded, “in order to make massage chairs as truly valuable products, we must devote our undivided attention to and specialize in them.”

Family Inada has stayed true to that vision ever since. Today, Inada massage chairs are still designed, engineered, and most importantly, manufactured in Japan — the most competitive market in the world with “15 percent of households owning a massage chair,” says Inada.

Thanks to half a century of competition, Japanese massage chair brands like Inada have had to continuously innovate. And as one of the first, Inada has lead the pack in product development and innovation.

Inada Brand Strengths

With Inada, you can expect your high upfront investment to pay for years to come. Thanks to Japanese manufacturing, Inada massage chairs have a lifespan of about 25 years. Plus, they incorporate proprietary technology you won’t find anywhere else.

Summary

4.6

The Japanese designed and manufactured Inada DreamWave has top-of-the-line massage technology, craftsmanship, and aesthetics. Though touted as the “best massage chair in the world,” our Inada DreamWave review reveals that while one of the best, it may not be the right choice for some users. We'll later find out that it's due to its high price tag and lack of features like foot rollers and Zero Gravity.

In 2008, Inada introduced the first ever full-body massage chair — the Sogno DreamWave. With its introduction, the massage chair industry was turned on its head and other companies quickly tried to replicate the design. Ten years later, the DreamWave is still revered as one of the best massage chairs in the world.

 Its most notable features include:

  • 1200+ square inches of massage coverage — the most coverage of any massage chair in the world.
  • 100 airbags throughout the chair that perform compression as well as advanced massage techniques.
  • A proprietary neck traction device that performs gentle tractioning of the neck and trigger point massage to the tops of the shoulders and trapezius muscle.
  • Seat swivel, also known as DreamWave technology, that rotates the hips from side to side to gently mobilize the lower back.
  • Airbags next to the thighs that inflate to perform a powerful IT band massage.
  • 3D massage rollers that give you control over the intensity of your massage.
  • Youth automatic massage program that’s specifically designed for users 14 years of age and up.

Chinese Massage Chair Brand Names

Osaki (Titan, Apex, Japan Premium)

Osaki is a division of Titan, a popular Chinese massage chair company who also owns the Apex massage chair brand. Together, these three brands — Titan, Osaki, and Apex — make up a large portion of the Chinese massage chair market in the U.S.

Although designed, engineered, and manufactured in China, Osaki brand massage chairs have earned the reputation of producing quality, affordable, and feature-rich chairs.

Their chairs often come with additional features like music systems, chromotherapy lighting, and other user experience-enhancing options which cater to recreational massage chair users.

However, you might not know that Osaki has a series of 100 percent Japanese-made massage chairs. The series consists of three high-end massage chairs: the Japan Premium 4.0, the Japan Premium 4S, and the Japan Premium 4D.

So you may be wondering...

WHY DOES OSAKI ONLY OFFER A FEW JAPANESE MASSAGE CHAIRS?

Great question.

It’s because Osaki’s Japan Premium series is actually produced by a company called Fujiiryoki, also known as Fuji Medical Instruments. And like Inada and Panasonic, it’s one of the oldest massage chair companies in the world.

In 1954, Fujiiryoki debuted the first ever wooden massage chair and has been making innovations in the industry ever since, including the first ever commercial massage chair with a roller track.

Today, Fujiiryoki continues to produce some of the highest quality massage chairs available anywhere and has the largest market share (30%) in the industry. Their massage chairs are often found in hospitals and wellness clinics throughout Japan which speaks to their level of quality and therapeutic benefit.

Thanks to Osaki’s Japan Premium series, Fujiiryoki massage chairs are now available to users in the U.S. seeking the very best 100-percent Japanese massage chairs.

OsAKi Brand Strengths

With Osaki’s extensive lineup, there’s a massage chair for each type of user — from recreational to medical and everyone in between. For recreational users, you can expect a feature-rich massage chair without the high price tag. For therapeutic users, you can expect a true medical-quality massage chair thanks to Osaki’s Japan Premium line.

Summary

4.9

With advanced 4D massage roller and air massage technology, the Osaki Japan Premium Massage Chairs offer the highest-level of massage quality available on the market. Each of the three models — the JP 4.0, JP 4S, and OS-4D — offers a unique set of features. However, above all, the JP 4S offers the most customization options with its intuitive touchscreen remote. Made entirely in Japan, the Osaki Japan Premium massage chairs are among the most expensive available, but you really do get what you pay for.

The Osaki Japan Premium 4S is without a doubt one of the most advanced and quality pieces of massage technology money can buy. Its most notable features include:

  • 4D massage rollers that add a fourth dimension of rhythm which alternates the speed of the rollers to mimic the dynamic movements of a massage therapist.
  • One of the most robust sets of massage techniques on any massage chair — 41 techniques total.
  • 20 automatic programs, plus eight mini massage courses that let you enjoy the benefits of automatic programs and the precision of manual options.
  • Special shoulder massage that extends to rollers to the outsides of the shoulders.
  • 100 percent Made in Japan.

Summary

4.7

One of the most popular models, the Osaki OS 4000 is a user-friendly massage chair loaded with features that deliver an extremely high level of massage quality for the price.

While Osaki has models that are more advanced and more expensive than the OS-4000, its combination of features and affordability have made it one of the most popular Osaki massage chairs ever. Its most notable features include:

  • At a little over $2,000, the Osaki OS-4000 gives you a lot of bang for your buck.
  • Two stages of Zero Gravity recline that puts users into the most ergonomic and massage-friendly seating position possible.
  • Automatic leg scan that detects the length of your legs for a custom-fit calf and foot massage.
  • S-Track that’s designed to replicate the natural curvature of your spine for consistent contact and pressure across the entire roller range.

Titan Alpine

While most quality massage chairs have S-Tracks that extend from the neck to the tailbone, the Titan Alpine has an S-Track and an L-Track. The L-Track picks up where the S-Track ends and extends into the seat of the chair to form an “L” shape — adding 20 inches of additional massage range.

  • A 50-inch L-track — one of the longest on the market that treats from the neck to the glutes and hamstrings.
  • Mechanical foot rollers that work together with airbags in the ottoman to provide a comprehensive calf and foot massage.

High-end features like calf rollers, L-Track, and deep tissue, combined with a robust set of customization options and an affordable price point make the Apex Ultra Massage Chair an exceptional model for the money.

Although the Apex brand only has a few models, they’re equipped with some of the most innovative and interesting features, for example, the Apex Lotus features a negative ion generator and the Apex Regent features 4D rollers. But it’s the Apex Ultra that we feel offers some of the most compelling features for the price. Its most notable features include:

  • A 50-inch L-Track provides massage coverage from the neck to the hamstrings.
  • Powerful rollers perform true deep tissue massage.
  • Calf rollers, a rare feature, work with foot rollers and airbags to perform one of the most comprehensive calf and foot massages available.

U.S. Massage Chair Brands

Human Touch

Human Touch is a massage chair company based in Long Beach, California. They’ve been producing massage chairs for over 35 years and have earned numerous awards for their designs, including many Design Journal Awards for Design Excellence (ADEX). Additionally, their massage chairs are the only ones recognized by the World Federation of Chiropractic as being valid complements to chiropractic therapy.

An important aspect of the Human Touch brand is their attention to aesthetics. Human Touch explains their mission is to “blend patented technology and ergonomics with contemporary design.” So Human Touch massage chairs are designed to not only perform a high-quality massage but to fit in with modern decor. Human Touch’s attention to aesthetic details means you not only get a high-quality massage but get an attractive piece of furniture.

While all of Human Touch’s design, engineering, and customer service take place at their California headquarters, their massage chairs are manufactured in China.

Human Touch Brand Strengths

With Human Touch, you can expect a massage chair that not only performs well but looks good. Their chairs are made to match modern home decor and most are comfortable enough to be used as sitting chairs when not in use. Human Touch also offers massage chairs in every price range — from under $500 to over $8,000.

Infinity

Infinity Therapeutics is a division of Infinite Creative Enterprises — a privately held U.S. company.

In 2009, they launched the Infinity Therapeutic massage chair line. Although relatively new to the massage chair industry (especially compared to the world’s oldest Japanese massage chair brands), Infinity massage chairs quickly made a name for themselves as being affordable and feature-rich.

Infinity has a way of combining the features you wish you could find altogether on a massage chair but rarely do. Want a massage chair that has a powerful roller system, a great neck massage, Zero Gravity, foot rollers, all of the other most popular features and is still affordable? Infinity has it.

The Infinity massage chair headquarters are located in Seabrook, New Hampshire where they house their customer service team. However, Infinity massage chairs are manufactured in either Taiwan or China depending on the model.

Infinity Brand Strengths

Perhaps the most compelling aspect of the Infinity brand is their combination of features. Their chairs bring together the most sought-after features and in combinations you won’t find on any other brand of massage chairs.

However, all of the other components — research, development, engineering, software, electronic hardware, and assembly — occur in the U.S. Additionally, Luraco’s customer service team is also based in the U.S. and is frequently touted as being one of the most responsive of any massage chair company.

Value for the Money

Summary

4.5

The Ogawa Active SuperTrac is an unusual design. Most of its features are excellent, but there are a few things that will leave you underwhelmed. It’s clearly above average, but falls short of true excellence. Recommended for hobbyists or casual users. People who suffer from chronic lower back pain.

The Ogawa Active SuperTrac is one of the most unique massage chairs for one simple reason: it has both an S-Track and an L-Track, but they work independently. So rather than forming a single piece of track like most L-Track massage chairs, the Ogawa Active SuperTrac keeps the track types separate.

Why would they do this?

Because when you have a single piece of track the backrest and the seat are attached which means you’re limited in how much you can recline. In other words, where the backrest goes, the seat goes with it.

On the Ogawa Active SuperTrac, however, the independent tracks allow you to recline nearly parallel with the ground in what Ogawa calls the “bed position.” In this position, you can enjoy the full 43-inch range of the rollers. It’s like laying in a bed with massage rollers.
