After a stressful day, relaxation in the comfort of your home is a dream come true. That’s the benefit massage chairs provide, but finding a suitable model can be overwhelming.

A standard ergonomic recliner is a good starting point to learn about the various features and programs on offer.

Our Bodyfriend Hugchair review looks closely at a model designed by a reputable brand, with a fun twist for all of those Marvel lovers out there!

Bodyfriend Hugchair Design Overview

The Bodyfriend brand originated in South Korea, setting itself apart from the competition with meticulously researched massage chairs designed by its very own team of medical professionals.

Another interesting way Bodyfriend has made a name in the market is its selection of superhero-themed massage chairs.

That’s right. They teamed up with Marvel to create the first Marvel massage chair: the Bodyfriend Hug Chair 2.0, which is the focus of our review.

This ergonomic recliner takes inspiration from Iron Man’s armor and Captain America’s shield, and the result is a sleek, compact design with serious aesthetic appeal.

It is a low-range chair with minimal therapeutic value, but it’s perfect for Marvel enthusiasts who also want a comfortable recliner to help them relax.

It keeps life light and fun, with two different exterior designs: Iron Man and Captain America.

The Hugchair 2.0 dimensions are 37 in x 25 in x 41 in, and it weighs 99 pounds, so it should fit nicely in small spaces, including apartments.

Hug Chair 2.0 with blue and white PU upholstery and Captain America shield on the headrest

It has a user-friendly setup controlled by a built-in remote panel on the armrest. You’ll never have to worry about flipping through tons of features or losing your remote controller.

But once again, remember that if you want to treat chronic lower back or leg/foot pain, you might want to consider other models, such as the Bodyfriend Phantom 2 massage chair.

Still, you get a high-quality track and massage ball system, Zero Gravity Seating, and a conversation piece that your friends will probably swoon over.

Let’s see what the Hugchair 2.0 has to offer!

Hug Chair 2.0 Features

The Hugchair 2.0 offers just the right amount of features to give users an easy, relaxing massage experience without the steep learning curve.

S/L- Track + Adjustable Massage Balls

Bodyfriend Hug Chair 2.0 with white base, blue and white exterior, and Captain America shield on the headrest

It all starts with the massage track and roller system, which is standard with the Hugchair. It features an extensive S/L-track that follows the spine’s natural curve and dips underneath the seat to massage the glutes and thighs.

This track type is the industry standard, so rest assured that your entire neck, shoulders, back, and seat areas are well covered.

Interestingly enough, you won’t find 2D, 3D, or 4D rollers zooming along the track with deep tissue prowess.

Instead, the Hugchair utilizes massage balls to provide a stimulating massage that loosens tension and melts away soreness.

The balls are located in the neck, shoulders, back, waist, and glutes. They are adjustable, so users can fine-tune where they want the balls to massage, from the neck down to the lumbar region.

While massage balls aren’t the industry standard, Bodyfriend has made it pretty clear that Hugchair has a minimal feature-set meant for relaxation. The price makes it clear, too.

Zero Gravity Seating

One therapeutic feature Bodyfriend did include is Zero Gravity Seating.

It is a popular recline angle that you’ll see with many chairs on the market, so it’s not new technology.

Zero Gravity Seating on the Hugchair works by reclining to 170 degrees. The legs are slightly elevated above the heart, releasing gravitational pressure and inducing a feeling of weightlessness.

It enhances the massage experience considerably, facilitating blood flow throughout the body and taking pressure off the joints and spine.

The Hugchair has two angles to choose from, so the user has some freedom to find the most comfortable position.

While some of Bodyfriend’s other models give the user complete control over adjusting the recline angle, two positions are still considered above average compared to other low-range chairs on the market. You typically only see one position for this price.

Accessories

Bodyfriend made sure to include a few extra essentials to enhance the ambiance while receiving a massage.

It’s not a treasure trove of accessories like you’ll find with mid to high-range chairs, but we’d say here in our Bodyfriend Hugchair review that we are happy with the selection for the price.

A premium sound speaker is built into the headrest, and Bluetooth allows the user to connect their smartphone and enjoy the playlist of their choice.

There’s also a USB port for charging personal devices, so you can watch your favorite Marvel movie without jumping up to find a power outlet for your dying phone.

Massage Programs

As you can guess, the massage techniques are limited since there are no quad rollers. The Hugchair can administer kneading, tapping, combination, chopping, and acupressure. There are three intensity/speed levels to choose from.

You can select the manual mode to enjoy these techniques at your leisure with a 15-minute auto timer.

Or, you can select from four auto programs when you don’t want to think and just want to start relaxing immediately.

The auto programs include:

  • Neck/Shoulder-Focused
  • Waist/Back-Focused
  • Relaxing
  • Soothing

There are airbags located in the hips to compress the muscles while the massage balls do their thing. But we were surprised that full-body air massage wasn’t included in the design.

Air massage is a specialty program found in the majority of chairs that applies a less intense massage for relaxation and pain relief.

Honestly, there are plenty of other low-range models with multiple airbags from head to toe. It would’ve been nice to see a full-body air massage with the Hugchair.

There is no foot/calf massage, too, which typically includes reflexology foot rollers and airbags in the footwells.

Instead, the Hugchair has an extendable flat footrest panel to elevate your tired gams after a day of running around.

It is another specialty massage you can find offered by other chairs in this price range, so the Hugchair loses a few points here, in our opinion.

Bodyfriend Hug Chair 2.0 Pros vs. Cons

PROS

  • Attractive, compact design
  • Extensive S/L- track
  • Adjustable massage balls
  • Zero Gravity Seating (two positions)
  • Affordable

CONS

  • No full-body air massage
  • No foot/calf massage

Low-range massage chairs are adequately priced to give hobbyists a user-friendly, relaxing experience. But they are limited when it comes to what they can do.

The Bodyfriend Hugchair 2.0 is designed for looks and comfort more than therapeutic value, so you won’t get leg wells that work your painful foot arches, swollen calves, or Shiatsu.

Instead, you’re rubbed down via traditional massage balls. While you can adjust the balls to your liking on the Hugchair, it just doesn’t compare to 3D or 4D rollers.

Don’t get us wrong, it will feel good on your tight muscles, but it’s not like the cutting-edge tech that replicates the movements of human hands.

The Hugchair 2.0 does include Zero Gravity Seating, which enhances the therapeutic benefits immensely. But this chair is simply not designed for people suffering from chronic conditions looking to cut down on chiropractor visits with a massage chair.

We recommend the Bodyfriend Hugchair 2.0 for…

  • Marvel fans who want a slick collector’s massage chair
  • Hobbyists who want a standard recliner to help them relax after a stressful day
  • Small apartment dwellers with limited space

Hugchair 2.0 Massage Chair Warranty

Bodyfriend offers a cushy five-year limited warranty on the Hugchair 2.0, covering all parts, labor, and framework costs.

Parts and labor are covered for the first three years, and the framework is covered for all five years. You can read the fine print here.
